The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) is one of the most significant direct benefit transfer schemes currently running in India. Launched on 1st February 2019 by the Government of India, the scheme aims to supplement the financial needs of land-holding farmer families across the country. Under this scheme, eligible farmer families receive income support of Rs 6,000 per year, transferred directly into their bank accounts in three equal installments of Rs 2,000 each. The scheme is fully funded by the Central Government and has benefited over 11 crore farmer families since its inception. Background and Objective Agriculture continues to be the primary livelihood for a large section of India's population. Despite this, farmers often face income uncertainty due to unpredictable weather, fluctuating market prices, and rising input costs. The PM-KISAN scheme was introduced to provide a stable and assured income supplement to farming families, helping them meet their agricultural and household expenses. The scheme was initially limited to small and marginal farmers holding up to 2 hectares of land. However, in June 2019, the scope was expanded to cover all land-holding farmer families across the country, regardless of the size of their land holdings. The official notification and guidelines can be accessed at PM KISAN portal. Who is Eligible? All land-holding farmer families are eligible for the scheme, subject to certain exclusion criteria. A farmer family is defined as a family consisting of husband, wife, and minor children who own cultivable land as per the land records of the concerned state or union territory. The following categories of beneficiaries are excluded from the scheme, even if they belong to farmer families: Former and present holders of constitutional posts Former and present ministers, members of Parliament, and members of state legislative assemblies Former and present mayors of municipal corporations and chairpersons of district panchayats All serving or retired officers and employees of central or state government ministries, departments, and field units, as well as those of central or state PSEs and government autonomous bodies (excluding Multi-Tasking Staff, Class IV, and Group D employees) All persons who paid income tax in the last assessment year Professionals such as doctors, engineers, lawyers, chartered accountants, and architects who are registered with professional bodies and carry out their profession All retired pensioners with a monthly pension of Rs 10,000 or more (excluding Multi-Tasking Staff, Class IV, and Group D employees)The detailed eligibility criteria and exclusion guidelines are available at the official PM-KISAN portal How Much Money Do Farmers Receive? The financial benefit under the scheme is Rs 6,000 per year per eligible farmer family. This amount is released in three installments: First installment (April to July): Rs 2,000 Second installment (August to November): Rs 2,000 Third installment (December to March): Rs 2,000 The amount is transferred directly to the bank account of the beneficiary through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This ensures that the money reaches the farmer without any intermediary or leakage. The fund release status and utilisation data is tracked through Public Financial Management System (PFMS) How to Register for PM-KISAN Farmers can register for the scheme through multiple channels: Through the PM-KISAN Portal: Visit the official website at https://pmkisan.gov.in On the homepage, click on "New Farmer Registration" Select whether you are a rural farmer or an urban farmer Enter your Aadhaar number and select your state The system will verify whether you are already registered. If not, you will be directed to a registration form. Fill in all the required details including your personal information, bank account details, and land ownership information Submit the form along with required documents Through Common Service Centres (CSC): Farmers who are not comfortable with online registration can visit their nearest Common Service Centre. CSC operators are authorised to assist farmers with the registration process. The list of CSCs can be found at https://csc.gov.in Through State Government Nodal Officers: Each state has designated nodal officers who assist with the PM-KISAN registration process. Farmers can contact their local agriculture department or Krishi Vigyan Kendra for assistance. To know the nodal officer, click here. Documents Required for RegistrationThe following documents are needed to register for the scheme: Aadhaar card (mandatory — Aadhaar seeding with bank account is required for receiving payments) Land ownership records (Khasra Khatauni or equivalent land documents as per your state) Bank account details (account number, IFSC code) Mobile number linked to Aadhaar It is important to note that Aadhaar-bank account linking is mandatory for receiving payments. Farmers who have not completed this linking can do so by visiting their bank branch with their Aadhaar card. The Aadhaar authentication process is managed by UIDAI, details of which are available at https://uidai.gov.in How to Check Payment Status Farmers can track whether their installment has been credited through multiple methods: Online through the PM-KISAN Portal: Visit https://pmkisan.gov.in Click on "Beneficiary Status" in the menu Enter your Aadhaar number, mobile number, or account number The system will display all installments received, including the amount and date of credit Through the PM-KISAN Mobile App: The government has released a mobile application called "PM-Kisan Mobile App" which is available for Android users. Farmers can check their beneficiary status, registration status, and payment history through this app. Through the PFMS Portal: Payment tracking is also possible through the Public Financial Management System at https://pfms.nic.in where farmers can verify the DBT transaction status. Common Reasons for Payment Failure Many farmers face issues with receiving their installments. Based on data available from the PM-KISAN helpdesk, the most common reasons include: Aadhaar not seeded with bank account: This is the single most common cause. The farmer's Aadhaar number must be linked to their bank account for DBT to work. Visit your bank branch to get this done. Incorrect bank account details: Sometimes the account number or IFSC code entered during registration has errors. This can be corrected through the portal under "Updation of Self Registered Farmer." Land records not verified: The state government verifies land ownership before approving payments. If the verification is pending, payments will be held. Contact your local Patwari or Tehsildar office for land record issues. Many states have digitised their land records, which can be accessed through the Digital India Land Records Modernisation Programme (DILRMP) at https://dilrmp.gov.in Name mismatch: If the name in Aadhaar does not match the name in bank records or land records, the payment can get stuck. Ensure all three documents carry the same name. Account inactive or closed: If the linked bank account has been inactive for a long time or has been closed, the transfer will fail. Ensure your account is active. The PM-KISAN helpdesk can be reached at 155261 or 011-24300606 for assistance with payment-related issues. eKYC Requirement The government has made eKYC mandatory for all PM-KISAN beneficiaries. Farmers who have not completed their eKYC will not receive further installments. eKYC can be completed in two ways: OTP-based eKYC: Visit https://pmkisan.gov.in, click on "eKYC," enter your Aadhaar number, and verify with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Biometric eKYC: Visit your nearest CSC centre with your Aadhaar card for fingerprint-based verification. This is useful for farmers whose mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar. State-wise Implementation While PM-KISAN is a central scheme, its implementation involves active participation from state governments. State governments are responsible for: Identifying eligible farmer families Verifying land records and ownership Uploading beneficiary data on the PM-KISAN portal Handling grievance redressal at the local level The performance of the scheme across different states and union territories can be tracked through the PM-KISAN dashboard available at https://pmkisan.gov.in. The dashboard provides state-wise data on registrations, payments released, and pending verifications. For state-specific agriculture schemes that complement PM-KISAN, farmers can refer to their respective state agriculture department websites. Grievance Redressal If a farmer faces any issue related to PM-KISAN — whether it is regarding registration, payment delays, or incorrect information — there are several channels available for raising a complaint: PM-KISAN Helpdesk: Call 155261 or 011-24300606 Centralised Public Grievance Redressal and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS): Complaints can be filed online at https://pgportal.gov.in PM-KISAN Portal: Use the "Grievance" section on the website to submit your complaint with a tracking numberFarmers are advised to keep their registration acknowledgment number handy when contacting the helpdesk, as it speeds up the resolution process.
