Why Body Weight Matters Knowing an animal's body weight is one of the most basic and most useful pieces of information a livestock keeper can have. Weight is not just a number for the record book; it directly drives day-to-day decisions on the farm: Feeding and rationing - the amount of feed, fodder, and concentrate an animal need is calculated as a percentage of its body weight; under- or over-estimating weight leads to under-feeding (poor growth) or wasted feed (higher cost). Medication and deworming dosage - drugs, vaccines, dewormers and anaesthetics are dosed per kilogram of body weight; an inaccurate weight risks under-dosing (treatment failure) or over-dosing (toxicity). Growth monitoring - tracking weight gain over time shows whether an animal is developing normally, helps flag illness early, and lets a breeder assess the effectiveness of a feeding or breeding programme. Marketing and sale - buyers and sellers use weight to negotiate a fair price, particularly for cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats and pigs sold on a live-weight basis. Breeding and reproduction decisions - a doe, ewe, cow or sow needs to reach a minimum threshold weight before she is fit for breeding, and weight is watched closely during pregnancy. Weigh bridges and platform scales give the most accurate reading, but they are expensive, not portable, and simply unavailable on most small and medium farms. This note sets out the practical alternatives, and gives the tape-measurement formula for each major class of livestock, along with a simple sketch showing exactly where to place the tape. Methods of Determining Body Weight Three broad approaches are used in the field, in increasing order of accuracy: Visual appraisal (guessing) — an experienced eye estimates weight by looking at body size and condition. It is quick and needs no equipment, but is the least reliable, and is not recommended when an accurate figure is needed for medicine dosage or ration planning. Weighing scale / weighbridge — the animal is walked onto a calibrated platform scale. This is the most accurate and consistent method available, and should be used whenever possible, especially for valuable animals or exact drug dosing. Weigh tape — a specially printed tape is wrapped around the heart girth; the tape is pre-calibrated to show an approximate weight directly. It is inexpensive, easy to use, and gives consistent readings when the same person uses it each time, but it is a single-measurement estimate and somewhat less accurate than a two-measurement formula. Weight-estimation formula (heart girth × body length) — an ordinary cloth or flexible measuring tape is used to record two measurements, heart girth and body length, which are then put through a simple formula. This method is usually more accurate than a weigh tape, and is almost always far more reliable than visual guessing. It is the method detailed for each species below. Whichever method is used, the following practices improve accuracy and keep both the handler and the animal safe: Stand the animal squarely on level ground before measuring. Have a second person hold the animal steady, or restrain it appropriately, while the tape is placed. Keep the tape flat against the body, snug but not pulled tight enough to compress loose skin or, in sheep, the wool. Take the heart girth reading just behind the shoulder blade / withers, directly over the heart, not further back on the barrel. Approach the animal calmly; allow it to get used to the tape before taking the reading. Use the same person and the same method each time an animal is monitored, so that readings stay comparable over time. These formulae are estimates, not exact figures. They are noticeably less reliable for pregnant animals and for animals with unusual body conformation. Formula Method, Species by Species For every species below, three measurements define the formula: A (point of shoulder), B (point of rump / pin bone — the straight-line distance A–B is the body length), and C (heart girth, the circumference taken just behind the shoulder, in line with the heart). All measurements are taken in inches, and every formula returns weight in pounds. Measure body length: from the point of the shoulder (A) to the point of the rump or pin bone (B). Measure heart girth (C): pass the tape around the body just behind the shoulder blade, down the foreribs and under the body directly behind the elbow, in line with the heart. Weight (lb) = (Heart girth × Heart girth × Body length) ÷ 300 Example: heart girth 70", body length 78" (70 × 70 × 78) ÷ 300 = 1,274 lb Measure body length from the point of shoulder (A) to the point of rump / pin bone (B), exactly as for cattle. Measure heart girth (C) just behind the shoulder, in line with the heart — buffalo typically carry a deeper, heavier girth than cattle of similar height, so keep the tape snug over the dewlap and brisket. Weight (lb) = (Heart girth × Heart girth × Body length) ÷ 300 Example: heart girth 76", body length 66" (76 × 76 × 66) ÷ 300 = 1,270 lb Buffalo are not always covered separately in published extension tables; in practice, field workers apply the same heart-girth formula used for cattle, since the two species share a broadly similar body conformation. Treat the resulting figure as an approximation and, where possible, calibrate it against a scale for the herd or breed in question. Measure body length from the point of shoulder (A) to the point of rump / pin bone (B). Measure heart girth (C) directly behind the front legs, in line with the heart. On unshorn sheep, part or firmly compress the wool with the tape so the reading reflects the body underneath, not the fleece. Weight (lb) = (Heart girth × Heart girth × Body length) ÷ 300 Example: heart girth 35", body length 30" (35 × 35 × 30) ÷ 300 = 122 lb Measure body length from the point of shoulder (A) to the point of rump (B). Measure heart girth (C) from the base of the withers, down under the belly just behind the elbow and foreleg, and all the way back around. Weight (lb) = (Heart girth × Heart girth × Body length) ÷ 330 Example: heart girth 70", body length 65" (70 × 70 × 65) ÷ 330 = 965 lb 330 is the constant for a mature horse. For a yearling, use 301 in place of 330; for a weanling (foal), use 280. Measure body length from between the ears (poll), over the backbone, to the base of the tail (A to B). The pig should be standing squarely, or gently restrained, for an accurate reading. Measure heart girth (C) just behind the front legs, in line with the heart. Weight (lb) = (Heart girth × Heart girth × Body length) ÷ 400 Example: heart girth 45", body length 54" (45 × 45 × 54) ÷ 400 = 273 lb For pigs weighing under 150 lb, add 7 lb to the figure the formula gives. For pigs between 150 and 400 lb, no adjustment is needed. 4.
