What is a Synthetic Breed? A Synthetic (composite) cattle breed is developed by deliberately combining two or more breeds typically a hardy indigenous (Bos indicus) breed with exotic (Bos taurus) breed followed by structured selection over several generations to stabilise a desired blend of traits. Unlike a simple first-cross, a synthetic breed breeds true, meaning its offspring reliably retain the target combination of milk yield, heat tolerance, and disease resistance. Composites are mainly produced toaccomplish two broad objectives viz., breed complementarity (to combine good qualities of two or more breeds) and heterosis (hybrid vigour). A crossbreeding cattle is itself ancient and pre-dates written record; many of India's present-day "indigenous" breeds were themselves shaped generations of intentional and indirect long-term farmer selection. What distinguishes the breeds discussed here is that they were developed through organised, institution-led in organized farms and genetic improvement programs under field conditions through documented pedigrees. Background The first recorded scientific crossbreeding of Indian cattle with Bos taurus (European) cattle was the "Taylor Cross" undertaken near Patna in the late 1800's. It was created with Shorthorn and Jersey blood. In the 1950s, several agricultural research institutes (Allahabad Agricultural Institute, National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI)) began experimental crosses such as Jersind, Brown Sindh, Jerthar. In the 1963, Crossbreeding was scaled up nationally under the Intensive Cattle Development Project (ICDP), marking the shift from isolated experiments to comprehensive national dairy-improvement strategy. The same year produced Sunandini (Kerala) and Karan Swiss (NDRI, Karnal). During 1968 - 1987, Vrindavani, Karan Fries, Phule Triveni, and Frieswal were developed by ICAR institutes and the Military Dairy Farms/Project Directorate on Cattle. The exotic inheritance percentage was between 50 - 62.5. Newer composites such as Hardhenu ( Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (LUVAS), Hisar) continued the effort. From 2023 the government began formal registration of livestock strains in India under the national accession system managed by the ICAR–National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR). Objective of developing Synthetic breed The objective of developing Synthetic Breeds has been to raise milk production in a tropical environment where high-yielding exotic breeds struggle to survive and perform. Synthetic breeds have the best of both as follows. Exotic breeds (Jersey, Holstein Friesian, Brown Swiss, Shorthorn) : higher milk yield and better feed-conversion efficiency. Indigenous breeds (Sahiwal, Red Sindhi, Tharparkar, Hariana, Gir, etc.) : heat tolerance, tick and disease resistance, and adaptability to constrained management conditions. It is now maintained across more than a dozen states, with Military Dairy Farms and All India Co-ordinated Research Project (AICRP) centres in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra. Karan Fries and Vrindavani were subsequently registered by NBAGR during 2025–26. Conclusion Synthetic breeds now form a substantial share of India's crossbred dairy cattle population and are central to the White Revolution's continuing goal to improve milk productivity. It enables improving milk-yield gains without full dependence on imported exotic germplasm, since the animals are bred to be locally adapted and self-sustainable. NBAGR registration (from 2023) gives these breeds legal and scientific recognition equivalent to indigenous breeds, aiding conservation, development and germplasm banking.
